You will almost never know the names of the Faceless Men, the men of ideas that drive world events, unless the Royals (royal by “blood,” wealth, or power accumulation) want to turn them into an icon. They can be found by tracing the Idea.
They may be holed up in universities, tucked away in think tanks, or exiled to some tall tower and sponsored by Really Rich Men in need of ideas to justify their privilege, give meaning to their lives and provide some soaring religious concept to live by. By religious I mean that the concept provides answers to the Big Questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? What is of Ultimate Value?
Meet one faceless Man, Andrew Marshall, born in 1921, appointed by the Nixon administration as a future strategist, i.e. foreign policy prophet, and as of 2013 still there at the age of 92! He is the mentor of NeoCons Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz, among many others.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Marshall holds the same religious view of “humans as numbers” that the Chicago School of Economics holds. Humans are not complex and unpredictable beings with a will of their own, they are numbers and their actions can be foretold with a little imagination backed up by a whole lot of math.
But wait, doesn’t the NeoCon ideology trace back to the 1930s and a group of Jewish-American Trotskeyites? Yes, and Trotsky’s idea of never-ending armed conflict is certainly evident in the NeoCon’s strategies. But those are just tactics, the basic religious idea, goes likes this:
Who am I? I am an evolved animal, without a soul, without eternal life, with limited free will. Of course, I am more highly evolved than the herd, I am smarter and I have a will of iron.
Why am I here? I am one of an elite Vanguard that will lead the other, lesser, animals (mere numbers, really) to a glorious future.
Where am I going? I will live forever in history as the savior of mankind. If I fail, the world will descend into chaos.
What is of Ultimate Value? I and the other members of the Vanguard are of Ultimate Value as the bearers of the truth.
You might recognize many elements of this religion as the religion of the Bolsheviks and you would be correct. But wait! Bolsheviks are leftist and the NeoCons are right! Which just goes to show you that the left-right paradigm conceals more than it explains. What you really need to know about an ideology is how it answers those Big Questions, because it matters, it matters a great deal.
Since, for them, the masses are mere numbers in a herd, what happens to them as individuals is irrelevant. If they die in the never-ending warfare, they are ‘collateral damage.” If half a million Iraqi children die as a result of sanctions, it was “worth it” as Madeline Albright said. Numbers, just numbers and Andrew Marshall, known as “Yoda” spent his life teaching his Jedhi knights how to predict the future based on paranoia backed up by the ancient mysteries of numerology:
What might the enemy do? The enemy might do this, then we will do that. Let’s do that BEFORE the enemy does this. Haha! That will foil them. Let’s run the numbers, numbers never lie. Of course, the herd has these antiquated notions about the value of human life, so we have to trick them-they are too stupid to see that it’s for their own good! Tell them it’s for democracy and freedom, they like those. Tell them God is on their side, they like that.
Tell them anything; after all, if we, the Vanguard fail, it be the end of the world and utter chaos.
The NeoCons, their minds set ablaze by faceless prophets of a stealthy and heartless religion, should be booted out of power-completely and irrevocably-and replaced with men who value human life.
