The Stupidity of Hate Crimes and Stand Your Ground Laws

No one knows how many laws there are in the United States. Apparently, no one can count that high. A researcher spent two years trying and came up with 3,000 Federal crimes (not counting the states!) but ultimately, he said, “you will have died and been resurrected three times,” and still not have an answer to this question.

So why add a few more really stupid laws like hate crimes and Stand Your Ground? All those other thousands of laws don’t cover assault and murder? Oh, but these are special cases: these involve how the perpetrator FELT during the commission of the crime.

How do you FEEL?

How do you FEEL?

Let’s say a thug beats up a gay guy. He could be tried for a hate crime because the victim is gay and theoretically the thug hated him because he was gay. He will get a stiffer sentence because he hated him when he assaulted him. His defense could be that he is an emotionless psychopath who just gets a thrill out of beating people up. No hatred involved. Not guilty.

How stupid is that? You can’t assault anyone-including gay guys, and it matters not a bit whether you felt hatred at the time you committed the crime.

How about Stand-Your-Ground laws? Self-defense has always been a defense, but “I FELT THREATENED?” That’s a defense for shooting someone? How stupid is that? What if you’re a scaredy cat and feel threatened several times a day? Who cares how you FEEL? Did you shoot this unarmed person? Guilty.

And while we’re on emotions; what is terror? How do you war on terror? Oh, but this is a special case…how so? How is it not a crime of murder, even mass murder? What kicks it out of the realm of laws against murder and into the stratosphere? Because it’s done for political reasons? Who cares? Did you or did you not murder these people?

Imagine if we had treated 9/11 like a crime, instead of a war pretext? Thousands of US troops dead, hundreds of thousands of civilians dead, trillions of dollars spent and nothing to show for it.

God knows we have enough laws-and they cover everything. Are we so enamored of cranking out more that we have to resort to stupidity like how the criminal FELT at the time he did the crime?

Get rid of crimes defined by emotions. Try people on their actions. Period.
