Empire-building is a monotonously predictable human failing and has been going on since Tribe A cast its covetous eyes upon the goodies of Tribe B. For many thousands of years no one objected to invading Tribe B, killing its men, stealing its women, enslaving its children, and stealing its stuff.
Well, Tribe B objected, of course, but who cares what the losers say?
This is obviously profitable for Tribe A; even more so if they can pull it off against Tribes C-Z. The simple scenario outlined in the above paragraph is still being enacted today, all over the world. Somewhere along the line, and I suspect the influence of Christianity, justifications for this murderous looting were constructed.
But where did America get its Empire-Building idea? Very simply; they brought it from across the pond and very few ever questioned it. And where did England, the Mother Country, get the idea? From the Dutch, who created the modern model for colonial exploitation that was taken up and taken over so enthusiastically by Britannia. (see video below)
The sun never set on the British Empire, they loved to say and George Galloway said that’s because God would never trust them in the dark. You can find the “Bloody History of Communism” documentaries, the “Bloody History of Fascism” documentaries, but you will be hard-pressed to find the Bloody History of Capitalism, though its history is far more bloody if only because it has had so many more years to do damage.
Some Americans woke up to the immorality of empire, such as Mark Twain and William James, who founded the Anti-Imperialist League in 1898. We have had our anti-war protests and critics within, who have usually been smeared as “unpatriotic.” But all empires fall, 100%, and the American empire is now in the process of falling.
Do not be afraid of that. The US is supposed to be a Republic, not an Empire. There is a better way to be in this world and I believe we are creative enough to figure out that better way.
